The Energy Bills Relief Act

The Southern Environmental Law Center has an in-depth article on the causes of our rising energy costs, particularly in the Southeast.

The article details four specific reasons we're seeing these increases: data centers, fossil fuel risks, utility business model and, last but not least, the Trump administration.

The article includes an intriguing map showing Virginia tied for Alabama in the competition for average rise in electricity bills. Not the competition we want to win.

Quoting from that article:

"In Virginia, electricity bills have risen by more than 25% over the past five years. These price increases hit many Southerners hardest because the problem is compounded in the region due to high energy burdens and large wealth inequalities. More than a third of the region's population struggles to pay their energy bills."

But, the usual question: What Can We Do?? Again, quoting the SELC article;

"The Energy Bills Relief Act incorporates energy solutions like solar, energy efficiency, and battery storage that can provide the South with cleaner, affordable, and more reliable energy, while strengthening American supply chains. Energy companies and utilities also need to be held accountable for making decisions that cost families money. The Energy Bills Relief Act protects households from increasing electricity costs and promotes community input on energy decisions."
