As Democrats here in Scott County, we know firsthand the struggles that working-class families face every day. Whether it's trying to make ends meet, finding good-paying jobs in our region, or watching the cost of living outpace our paychecks, the economic squeeze is very real.
But how did we get here, and who is really responsible?
Former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich's recent Substack column (robertreich.substack.com) included a clip from “The Colbert Report,” where Mr. Colbert played a “right-wing, blowhard, curmudgeonly TV host.“
The show aired in 2008 but, honestly, it could have been last week. The conversation is a humorous but deeply insightful description of the state of the American middle class. Reich breaks down exactly why our current economic model isn't working for everyday Americans.

Key Takeaways from the Conversation
Reich highlights several crucial points that resonate strongly with the platform we fight for locally and nationally:
We need a "Class Worrier": When accused of engaging in class warfare, Reich corrects the record by calling himself a "class worrier" [00:10]. His primary concern is the structural instability of an economy heavily skewed toward the top.
The Purchasing Power Problem: The root of our economic stagnation isn't a lack of hard work from everyday Americans. It’s that so much wealth is concentrated at the top. Working and middle classes simply do not have enough money to buy the goods and services produced by the economy [00:22].
Over 30 Years of Stagnation: Reich points out that for over three decades, the median wage hasn't risen. Working families only survived this stagnation by sending more household members into the workforce, working longer hours, and eventually taking on massive, unsustainable debt against their homes [01:11].
The Choice: Reform or Resentment: Looking forward, Reich warns that America faces a distinct choice. We can either enact economic reforms that enlarge the circle of prosperity for everyone, or we can fall victim to "angry politics"—a system that distracts us by scapegoating immigrants, foreign trade, or the poor [01:40].
What This Means for Scott County
Reich’s warning about "angry politics" is something we see all too often here in Southwest Virginia. It's easy for politicians to point fingers at vulnerable groups to explain away our economic hardships. However, the real issue is a system that has allowed wages to flatline while corporate profits and billionaire wealth skyrocket.
As Scott County Democrats, we reject the politics of division and scapegoating. We are fighting for the reform Reich talks about: policies that strengthen the working class, ensure everyone pays their fair share, and build an economy where our local families can thrive without drowning in debt.
